If they actually continue on their path of ensuring no ad blockers work on YouTube, I will simply cease watching it completely. I really hate how aggressive advertisement became over the years. I didn’t mind non-gore (because some ads shown really gruesome health issues) and non-porn side panels which didn’t animate. Hell, sometimes I’d click if they had what would interest me. There is absolute zero chance I will buy anything which bothers me. And I won’t let it waste the time of my life.

I like the game grumps and Lex Fridman. The documentaries are cool, but I have to watch them in a different container or YouTube will start feeding me 30 minute ads or rants that sound reasonable but are super bigoted and flawed when you actually think about it

Reddit meant more to me than anything else I do online, and I committed to leaving it behind even before I found Lemmy… YouTube is barely worth it even without the ads. And I’ve got a whole fediverse of video content to investigate

One of my oldest friends has recently started turning to the dark side, his PC died and he’s run out of new shows to watch… so started watching stuff on YouTube via the suggestions.

It started off as debates between men and women… I warned him that it was going to suggest him more and more extreme stuff and the algo will walk him further to the right. Now he’s quoting Andrew Tate, watching videos with conspiracies about great reset, ranting about trans people, ugh. When he said “the media is shoving trans in our face, all these trans personalities” I asked him to list these trans personalities, he couldn’t list one. He’s just spewing the rhetoric YT fed him. Very sad, he’s not the only one being infected by this shit.

This is why I would not want to pay a subscription to YouTube. I don’t trust that they would ever truely work out all the ads

Do you happen to know of a replacement for Youtube Vanced? It stopped getting supported due to cease and desist, and now it only works like half the time… (idk why youtube doesn’t create a version check and make it not work all the time, but w/e lmao I’ll take what I can get)

there is a replacement called revanced, here is their github page.

You will have to compile the youtube app yourself, their revanced manager will help you with that.

And you have to download the latest supported version that is 18.19.35 from apk mirror.

If you need any more help feel free to ask me :)

Tutorial Revanced. Download the latest Revanced Manager App from here & install: https://github.com/revanced/revanced-manager/releases/tag/v1.3.5 After that uninstall every update of your installed YouTube. (Use Google for that) Start Revanced Manager - Patcher - Select application - YouTube. Now look at the “Suggested:” app version. Remember the version number, go to apkmirror.com, search for YouTube and the right version number. Download and install. Restart Revanced Manager, Patcher, select, YouTube. Suggested and current should be the same version numbers now. Go to selected patches, click on default (if you don’t know what you are doing), click done. Click on patch, wait a bit. While it’s repacking go to your Youtube and disable it, before the install prompt comes (if you do it too early, there might be an error. Retry). When the install promp comes, you click install (and you might need to allow it in the settings). Voila, you have Revanced installed.

its not the supported way of doing it, and revanced doesnt release apks and therefore the apk you provided its not safe to use, even if there is nothing malicious in this apk you are never sure of that, so its better to just make the app with the manager yourself and btw its not that hard to do

As someone who uses and really enjoys Youtube Premium this upsets me. Feels very counter-to what is agreed on purchase:

I wonder if it’s possible to file a complaint as false advertisement. As part of the subscription it even says in the FAQ “ad-free” which this is definitely not. I’m not a lawyer though and this is not legal advice.

This reminds me of the “Ad free” tier of Paramount Plus. There were unskippable ads for other paramount shows. And the 5 second bumper counted as an ad and was unskippable.

I’m not a lawyer but anyone with a brain cell would agree this is false advertising at least, possibly breach of contract depending on what the TOS says.

Question, finally asked: Where do you get an ad free youtube client these days? Surely, posting a direct link here on Lemmy is not against rules?

I’d been using Revanced for quite a while, but then it eventually got caught up with and it stopped working. There was some hullabaloo about “fake” Revanced clones, and now I hear it’s transformed into a “patcher”. Only, on my phone I get a warning saying the patching may not work due to my processor or kernel or such – and lo, it does not, the patching throws an exception late-ish in the process and I’m left with an unpatched youtube app.

If they make it hard enough that they cannot host their code repo then they can’t maintain it, it should be shutting them all down.

Well yes, eventually, when they introduce breaking changes in YouTube.
Even so, I believe that today you can very well keep developing software even if you were not allowed to, unless you started committing with an account that personally identifies you, you can move to another hoster or host your own forge, maybe host it over Tor too, the kinda experimental radicle.xyz (btw, why/when did they make their website uglier?)

That’s why I canceled Premium. I was still getting ads AND Google still used trackers. AND content creators get next to no money from it…

So were at the point where we are paying for an experience with ads AND invasive trackers and personal data mining + psychological profiling just to watch videos? What the fuck, thats distopian AF.

I used to love to play around with my FireStick until Amazon locked it down. Then I got a Chromecast I loved until Googled locked it down. I’ve come to the conclusion that the best Media center is just an old Linux computer attached to a TV the way God intended
