What would be a good alternative to Imgur?
Catbox is a good one.
Or you could host something yourself, that way you got control over your own data.Definitely consider self-hosting for file sharing, because public file sharing sites without restrictive file size and auto-delete limits get abused and shut down constantly. 0x0.st (mentioned in another comment in this thread) used to host files indefinitely but switched to a temporary system because of abuse, so anyone who used it as their file host will now have a mass of broken links. Unfortunately, none of the self-hostable file sharing options with thumbnail previews that I’m aware of support image albums which was the most useful feature of Imgur.
I just tried Catbox, and that is pretty slick! I like how it gives the direct image link upfront, and it’s neat how instead of asking for a subscription fee they use patreon and sell merch. Seems refreshingly straightforward.
Just tried catbox also, it is pretty cool, simple and direct. No hidden monetizing. And they have litterbox for temporary storage
PixelFed is a great option if you don’t need anonymous hosting.
I built https://horizon.pics as a privacy friendly alternative to Imgur. It has no ads or third party trackers and allows optional server side encryption. It’s compatible with ShareX, Apple Shortcuts and GNOME with our custom client.
No offense but your site does a bad job explaining what this is or how it works. I find a lot of times I come across an intriguing product but there’s almost zero info about the product itself until after I register (which I’m not doing) so I just walk away.
I’ve done this on Floatplane a dozen times now. I still have no idea what it is or how it works.
Maybe make a demo video and upload it on the main page?
Can you post some example links so I can see what photos and videos look like through the service before I shell out my $5?
We have a bunch of screen shots in our tutorial articles here: https://docs.hrzn.cool/en/pics.
Depends on what you are doing, but 0x0.st is great and minimalist.
Do read the fine print on the page. Images will only last between 30 and 365 days on 0x0.st.
Yes, I do recommend reading the description. This might not be what you want.
Have you tried Pixelfed ?
i’m out of the loop here: is imgur in kahoots with reddit? i know that imgur has been the go-to hosting solution for redditors for ages, but are the companies intertwined? do i need to boycott imgur as well?
Not really, I’ve almost never used Imgur but cause Lemmy isn’t as “powerful” as Reddit, posting images directly into Lemmy leads to more work from the server running the instance and using a image hosting website cam help to reduce unnecessary traffic, then why not use the best option for it?
