They’re curating a particular community to try to avoid trolls and shitposters and lemmy.world was growing so fast that they didn’t have the mods or tools to keep everything in line to their satisfaction on their own instance. Once they’re happy with their mod abilities they’ll probably refederate.

It may not be a total loss, some primitive cultures consider it valuable.

An important distinction here is that he was convicted for the visa fraud kind of trafficking and not like sex trafficking or something. There’s a huge difference there but people hear trafficking and just assume it’s the worst kind imaginable.
