The main suggestion isn’t simply verification of Matrix accounts but being able to use a Matrix account instead of email to sign-up to servers. Also to be able to use Matrix in addition to Email for account recovery. Would be an alternate method of verifying the account, as well as enforcing usage of Matrix usage if Lemmy admins desire that.

The verification of Matrix account ownership isn’t really the primary goal, it’s just a nice side effect. It wouldn’t be in effect though unless the server had one of the first two options checked, if it’s the other two options it wouldn’t need to be verified to be added.

@kariboka@social.harpia.red Might be able to, but that might be a bit complex since XMPP has the same syntax as email (address@domain.tld), the way that Matrix is, it has a different syntax than email (@username:domain.tld) so the sign-up form could detect it differently than email. Which is why the requirement would be “Matrix or Email required”, not “Matrix and Email required”. Then you could have one single line in the sign-up form and it would still be familiar to most users.

Exactly, adding it later just means people can use the earlier versions. Some wiseasses may argue about missing content but that’s a stupid argument since cracked games don’t get updates to them either unless new cracks are published, and that doesn’t happen as often as actual updates are published.

Thankfully it doesn’t happen very often and if a game is out for a long while it’s a safe bet it very likely won’t be added. If they do though that curator still helps because it makes it more visible on the store page, so you can give a negative review, block its updates, and downgrade to a previous version without it (whether that’s officially through Steam’s downgrade tools, or downloading it elsewhere depends on the circumstance). Or remove it from your account if you don’t care about it anymore.

I figure they must think they can make their games sell better if they include it because it still hasn’t occurred to these dumbasses that if your games suck people just won’t buy them. Maybe its cope, after all you can’t tap into a market of people who don’t want your game (well I mean you can, but most companies don’t consider scamming people), so they assume all the people not buying it are pirating it.

I haven’t made any arguments in this thread, you are putting words in my mouth, and not really helping your credibility. All I said is that the person should defederate Lemmy instances and communities which go against the mission of their instance. Something that almost all instance operators would likely agree on.

Just for the record though, I don’t believe people should be kicked out of a project based on their nationality, that seems incredibly xenophobic. I don’t know where you got that idea that I said any of those things from.

Still worth while to do so, the trick is you need to defederate problematic instances. Not hide them, fully defederate. That stops problematic instances and communties from affecting your userbase. There’s many great Lemmy servers and communties out there. Just because a few of them aren’t great doesn’t mean you should dismiss all of them.

Something to consider is that they don’t consider people not buying their games as revenue loss in these studies because most of these studies are deliberately fudged to support their narrative. They can’t do anything about people just not buying their games, they wish they could but they also aren’t going to say it out loud because it doesn’t help their cause.

Disagreed, people will defend their community whether it’s a good community or not. And yes you and the others here sticking up for them are nobodies to me, and likely to the rest of us in the thread. People think the practice is shady, and they’re right to, a tracker could easily use such information against you if they fold or turn. But see, people who are with them either don’t think of these things or they deliberately avoid the topic because, like you yourself said, they’re defending a community they care about. So even if the ones they follow do things that are generally sketchy or seen as unacceptable they will still stick up for them, because they are there and they care about them and are willing to ignore the bad and shady stuff.

You know how in these kinds of discussions there’s always a bunch of nobodies who come crawling out of the woodwork to defend the person or group being accused or pointed out for doing shady shit. I don’t know it just seems weird and suspicious. Apparently I’m not the only one who noticed because they’re getting rather aggressively downvoted.

Seems like a honeypot to me, telling people to use something other than their home’s connection. Kind of difficult to prove. Really seems like they want that information specifically for the purpose of going after those people, since you know, ISP subscriber ID, can’t get that if they use the Library, a friend or acquaintance’s house, or an Inn or AirBnB, not saying you couldn’t track someone down with those if you wanted to, but it’s not as convenient.

Yeah that’s why it would be good to make deleted threads still show up for all users, they would be unlisted but the comments would all still be there.

It used to be that this would also happen with comments both deleted and removed but this functionality was changed and comments which are deleted or removed no longer error like that.

That’s mainly just the way the backend and UI handles the post, the thread and replies are still there, admins and mods can still see it, it just errors for users. We could potentially modify the Lemmy software (or it could be changed in an update) to allow viewing the deleted thread with the post saying *Deleted by User* just like it does with comments.

Sorry let me clarify, when I say unlicensed I meant that they are using Google Play services without Google’s permission or certification.

Even that is pretty limited since it can be disabled, and even if they changed it to not be officially able to be disabled by users, ROM makers can still disable it in various ways, and since their problem is TV boxes, including those shady unlicensed ones, I’m betting those would simply disable the feature via their unlicensed Android Roms.

Edit: Clarification, when I said unlicensed I didn’t mean Android itself, I mostly meant their use of Google play store and services which Google does require permission to use legitimately in your own Android product. Obviously it’s super easy to get them without google’s permission, it just won’t be licensed by them though if a company does that. And many TV boxes you buy cheap these days do indeed do that.

You’d probably need to monitor the computer’s network for a long time to get a detection, also something important is that if you’re on a System with AMT disabled/not present, you won’t ever get any, since those IntelME versions come without any network stack whatsoever.

In fact that’s one of the primary reasons why I haven’t tried it yet, almost none of the Intel computers I own even have the Intel AMT component enabled in the IntelME firmware, meaning they just won’t do it, like ever. The only one I have which supports AMT is an old Laptop with a slow AF intel Centrino, it’s so slow that it struggles with XFCE alone and no other apps running, I don’t know if I could use this computer long enough to get any readings from it because it’s just too slow to do anything really.

If you want to try it out I’d suggest building a copy of IntelMEtool and testing your Intel Machines to see if they have AMT enabled or present before trying yourself.
