  • Yea! It’s just an hdmi plug with no cable that makes your machine think that a monitor is plugged in. They are about $5-$10 online. You can set it to whatever resolution that you want so when you turn your main monitor off, this dummy monitor is still “on” and it will be what gets used when you start streaming to another device. There are ways to automatically switch to this dummy monitor and turn off all other monitors when you connect to stream and set everything back when you disconnect but I haven’t messed with that yet.

  • Nobara was my first attempt at leaving windows for good and it was great until it wasn’t. I went a few months without ever booting windows but started having issues when I bought a new gpu. I went from Nvidia to AMD and everything I read online said you just install the AMD gpu, nothing else needed to be done. Every game I tried to play and would crash within 20 minutes every single time. I eventually got so frustrated that I just booted windows, ran DDU, downloaded adrenaline and I was up and running. After I got settled in, I nuked nobara and installed bazzite and haven’t had a single issue since.

  • I went through Ubuntu, PopOS, and Nobara before I landed on Bazzite and so far it’s been the one that just works for me. I love all the built in tools like cooler control and the fact that I can just roll it back on boot if I mess something up. The only thing I’m missing so far is that I was using the Barrier app to control my work pc during the day but it doesn’t work on Wayland. I also just made the switch to an AMD gpu and I really like the adrenaline software on windows.

  • I’m not expert but for the sake of getting some discussion going:

Don’t open ports on your router to expose services to the open internet.

Use a vpn when torrenting and make sure your torrent client is set to only use the vpn’s network adapter. This way, if your vpn drops out the torrent client can’t reach the internet.

I keep everything local and use Tailscale to access things while I’m away from home.

  • I use the Mx master for work and it’s great. Can be used wired or wireless, 2.4ghz dongle or Bluetooth, and has a regular scroll wheel plus a thumb scroll. The regular scroll has a button to switch between individual steps or free spinning and you can also set it to free spin when flicked hard enough while in step mode. I regularly deal with 500-1500 page PDFs so being able to just flick a hundred pages or so is nice.

The issue I ran into with obsidian is that it saves the file with each keystroke. I wanted to store my notes in proton drive but the constant saving would cause it to error out. There is no adjustment on the save interval either. This is probably done to push people into paying for their cloud service. It felt like too much of a hassle and I’m not a huge note taker anyways so I get by with the notes app on my phone.

  • My brother and I started playing Grounded together as a way to just chill and catch up throughout the week. We were shocked with how much content was actually in the game. It’s like Valheim mixed with Honey I Shrunk The Kids, 4 player online coop, base building, survival. It has a storyline so there’s always a sense of direction and it syncs the world with everyone regardless of who plays so it’s easy to just come and go. I could definitely see a group of 10 year olds getting sucked into this.
