And we would be free to reverse engineer and lift their stuff without people defending their right restrict us because otherwise they wouldn’t make it.

The vast majority of serious innovation - not just incremental improvements like this patent represents - is done on public resources, not private. The patent system allows corporations to swoop in, monopolise the patents and keep us from free access to knowledge.

The point being made in the video is that the second patent doesn’t correctly reference the prior art - the numbers are wrong - and it is not substantially different. The patent office didn’t do their due diligence.

As for the first, it’s not just code or the staggered idea. There is quantitative research that determines a specific and non-obvious methodology. (Edit: that’s my opinion, but it would be subject to interpretation whether something is obvious - I could easily be wrong)

My broader critique of patents isn’t that they fail to stand up to their own rules - although they frequently do - but that the law itself runs counter to innovation.

If you’re saying this one is obvious, there is maths and research involved, not just "hey lay it down like this.

The basic concept is easy, the implementation details are not.

Yeah, it seems like it’s the fear of legal action that’s stopping them, but this information might change that.

The phrase “synthesised expert knowledge” is the problem here, because apparently you don’t understand that this machine has no meaningful ability to synthesise anything. It has zero fidelity.

You’re not exposing people to expert knowledge, you’re exposing them to expert-sounding words that cannot be made accurate. Sometimes they’re right by accident, but that is not the same thing as accuracy.

You confused what the LLM is doing for synthesis, which is something loads of people will do, and this will just lend more undue credibility to its bullshit.

I appreciate the thoughtful comments. I’d encourage you to watch to the end, there are definitely counterpoints.:

• The hoverpack is a late-game thing, and as I clarify in the follow up to this video, this is really to help people overcome the complexity hurdle of the early game, which is a big problem. The devs said only 0.2% of people beat the last phase of the game prior to 1.0. A lot of people are attacking this technique from the point of view of being very experienced players that have all the tools, but if you’re that far in the game, this may not be for you.
• I like my spaghetti factory, it emphasizes the complex industrial look of this game, which I don’t like to hide. This technique allowed me to make it far more complex than I ever would’ve managed without this technique. You can always encapsulate after you adopt this technique, and I absolutely have in certain places. Again, in the follow up to this video I cover encapsulation right at the start, although I don’t use that word for it.
• You can wave a deconstructor at the belt and see what’s on it.

This is not intended to be an all-encompassing method, just a rule of thumb that makes the task of hand-building the early factory much easier, which you can then scale and extend into the late game if you wish. Plenty of people are talking about logistics floors, but I don’t use them because they obfuscate even more than a ceiling belt. If your problem is that you can’t see what’s on the belt well… you can’t see through floors either. You can through glass floors, but then you’re bringing back the visual noise anyway, and I’ve always found tracking belts through even glass floors to be much more work than following a belt to the ceiling.

Again, I’d encourage you to finish the video and also check the follow-up, where I roll this method into stackable blueprints, and I explain that these blueprints can easily be incorporated into logistics floors if that’s your thing.

On lemmy I’ve been accused so many times of reverse-racism and reverse-sexism, where advocating for minorities brings out the trolls who want to muddy the waters and claim that noticing bigotry is the real bigotry actually, and they had big vote pile-ons to go with those comments.

This is largely from big instances with open sign-up. I assume lemmy attracts the right wing trolls who tend to get banned from other places, which is one downside of being a viable alternative that isn’t yet mainstream. Also I’m sure they target this place because it is generally left-leaning.

Because the decision of which politics is disallowed is a political discussion, and those people will bring their politics of bigotry to the table and argue that “no politics day” means minorities should be silenced.
