  • If you have to request the source code by asking for it via a form and get sent the code printed out via snail mail that is still “publicly accessible”. Not saying companies would do that since it seems like it’d just cost them money for no benefit, just that there are usually ways to really hinder people’s access without being closed source.

There could be lines drawn, but it’ll be hard to find the medium between reasonable and preventing exploits. Forcing an upload to third party services like github seems dubious. I guess a zip file somewhere on the company website wouldn’t be hard to do, provided the company isn’t bankrupt (which is an entire different can of worms, what do you do then).

I’d still be heavily in favor of such legislations fwiw, perfect is the enemy of good and all that, but there’s a sweet spot of “actually does something and doesn’t kill all live service games” that would need to be found

  • Yes. A limit on how long before announced server shutdown a game is allowed to be sold (with it otherwise having to allow refunds) would already go a long way, and that is something I’m in full support of. I’m not signing that petition though because it seems disconnected from reality.

“Just make games playable in offline” works for some games (and if planned from the start wouldn’t be that hard to implement), but ranges from “define playable” to “utterly insane” for others (imagine WoW servers shut down, is it in any way sensible to require allowing offlinr access?).

A more extreme but imo still reasonable variant would be forcing the open sourcing of server code and everything required to make networking work, with the license allowing self hosting of game servers. But even this can still be obstructed, because “open source” doesn’t have to mean “publically accessible code repository”

  • I recently got a used gaming laptop for the rare times I’m away from home for a while (next time likely for christmas) so the plan is to put linux on that from the start and see how it goes. And maybe getting diagnosed for adhd and getting on medication will mean I actually have the motivation to switch from windows before it becomes absolutely necessary, though thankfully I don’t get any start menu ads since I got rid of those with WinAeroTweaker, so I’m mostly happy with it.

Though I’ve been having some weird crashing issues that look like broken ram but aren’t, so if I end up replacing my mainboard from that (because at this point idk what else it would be) I’d likely have to reinstall windows anyway, and at that point I’d just switch.

  • I didn’t mind 7, some things I even thought were great compared to XP (like the search).

I can tolerate 10 well enough still given the de facto convenience of running windows for gaming, but the moment end of service comes around next year I’m switching to linux. I also have to use win 11 at work and it’s just infuriating how much worse it is. And conveniently Linux gaming got pretty good in the meantime, and I’ve been told I can now even set up a windows VM with GPU passthrough that activates when I start the VM for the cases where Linux just won’t work (though idk if that’ll work when the issue is anticheat, but I don’t play anything where that’s relevant anyway).

  • People buy cosmetics because they think they look cool and want to support the game they like. In WoWs, some premium ships are honestly hella fun in unique ways (while others are dumb op but of course some ppl pay for that too). In gachas it’s a mix of just wanting the character and gameplay advantages.

Personally the stuff I don’t get is spending money on the mentioned match 3 games, farm sims, and casual mobile games in general. Which are a huge market as mobile gaming is, for whatever reason I cannot comprehend, the largest gaming market in terms of revenue.

  • Ive only played like 4 hours yesterday (not like it’s been out for very long), but I guess for just seeing if it’s worth trying that works.

I think the strongest point is definitely the style it has going on - it knows what it’s trying to do and the UI and art style work together to convey that. It’s similar to Persona 5 in that way, and imo if P5 is a 10/10 execution of this, ZZZ is at least a 9/10.

I haven’t watched the trailer but the characters are certainly quite goofy, so what you said about it going for more comedy seems accurate. I didn’t have any actual laugh out loud moments though, it’s more of a generally amusing athmosphere they’re going for. The dystopian setting isn’t ignored but the overall vibes are definitely more on the fun than the depressing side.

Combat has been fun so far, both perfect dodging and a form of blocking (by swapping characters when the enemy attacks) exist and are rewarded by the game. The blocking in particular feels really good imo. The stylishness of it all makes it enjoyable even though it’s not hard (at least so far, there will probably be harder content at some point since that’s how gachas usually work).

So far I like it a lot, in many places it feels like a lot of passion went into it (though I feel similarly about all the mihoyo games I’ve played) in spite of it being a gacha. If you like the aesthetics I think you’ll at least have a good time for a while and can judge the rest for yourself.

  • Personally I just like my colleagues so it’s fun to be around them for the most part, and there are better lunch options around the office in my case (plus I’d never bother going somewhere when I’m home anyway). It being easier to just quickly ask a question is nice too. Also gets me actually out of the house and cycling for ~40 minutes a day. I also get way more done at work because working at the same pc I spend 90% of my free time at is not great at motivating my brain to do work.

Still, if I didn’t have the option to just stay home when I don’t feel like going to the office/am waiting for a package or something, I’d find that very annoying.
