  • It’s not addiction, it’s entitlement. The blackouts hit hard across the internet, a lot of people have gotten used to just dipping into Reddit’s knowledge pool when they want an answer. I’m not talking about people you’d really call Redditors. These are the friends who only show up when they want something. When they’re with their real friends, they don’t have much good to say about you.

I would say entitlement is a great word to describe it as well. I would say it’s a mixture of both for many of the people I was talking about. My comment was referring specifically that I would call “Redditors” but I do understand your point about the casual people that just search for an answer and click on a Reddit link.

The only thing I can compare it to is when the Uber drivers tried to strike, and old women were up in their Twitter mentions like, “You better not make me miss work!” Once they rely on you, they expect you as a sort of right, even if your service isn’t a right. If you stop being their appliance, they get mad. They never, ever want to place blame where it goes, either.

100% That is exactly the attitude I saw on Reddit from many accounts.

The moderators denied these entitled children their precious subreddits and all of the sudden they were up in arms calling the moderators dictators and calling developers of third party apps freeloaders.

That’s the thing, and that’s why Reddit is trying to IPO. There’s more to it than just people having a dopamine problem. It’s more like you’re their Uber driver, and you’d better not mess up their schedule. Fuck your strike and fuck you. Get back to work.

I have no doubts that there are plenty of people like that. The moment they are inconvenienced they longer care about anything but themselves. That’s why all the comments and knowledge I have put on Reddit has been deleted. Part of the reason I haven’t deleted my account is because of the reports of Reddit “undeleting” comments. No idea if that is true but I want to retain the right to re-delete them if the need arises.

I think a lot of the people who made Reddit what it is and was may have learned their lesson by seeing their needs treated so dismissively, so they’ll be pretty gun shy to put themselves in that spot, again. Figure it out yourselves if that’s how it is. You mod the fucking thing, then.

It’s mind blowing how many moderators, for fear of losing their mod status, re-opened their subreddits.

These mods are working for free to put money in Reddit’s pocket and they have allowed themselves to be treated this way and yet still continue to work for free. I have absolutely zero respect for those mods and honestly find it incredibly sad and honestly pathetic.

The moderators who are telling Reddit to get fucked regardless if they lose mod status are the only ones with any integrity and self-worth.

  • I think this plays a big part in it. Reddit is absolutely massive.

Other than a couple of comments about the policy changes I haven’t posted on Reddit in about a week. I haven’t deleted my account just yet and occasionally have checked in on a couple of subreddits that have reopened and noticed the shear number of comments from accounts saying they don’t care about third party apps or the changes being mad.

It’s a bit mind blowing that all it takes for a lot of redditors to openly support anti-user policy and dictatorial CEOs is losing access to their favorite subreddits for 48hs. The word addiction really is apropos in many cases.
