Everyone says to fix it, download DNSMASQ, and disable IPV6. Both of which don’t fix it for me, or pretty much anyone else having the issue since 2015.

just going to say this are you sure you haven’t checked updated and uninstalled drivers and also prehaps checked to see if its a hardware issue maybe worked your way through some troubleshooting guides maybe

I don’t really know how else to troubleshoot it. I’ve changed distros mulitple times, downloaded Steam from different repos/directly, and tried all of the "fixes’ posted online. My NIC isn’t the issue, since I am clearly getting 1887Mbps down in Firefox. If you have any suggestions, I’d love to try them.

Truth is, no one knows why it’s happening, or what the actual fix is, and they are pretending to withhold the fix until I apologise for saying Linux doesn’t just work like Windows does. None of these hateful Lemmy Linux users that are attacking me actually know how to fix it, but they can’t admit Linux can be hella janky.

Steam only downloads at around 120Mbps on all of the distros I’ve tried, which are Ubuntu 23.10, Fedora 39, and Manjaro 23.0.4.

The distro sees my 2.5Gb NIC, and the web browser downloads at full speed, but Steam refuses.

I tried everything. Changing servers, installing DNSMASQ, different distros, etc. and nothing fixes it. DNSMASQ did bump up my speed to 300Mbps for a second, but then right back down to 120Mbps.

Upon Googling this, it’s a known issue. A LOT of people have the issue. Some them say DNSMASQ fixes it, others say Valve fixed it years ago, and others, like me, say nothing fixes it, and we move back to Windows where we get 1900Mbps download on Steam.

Everyone who wants to fight me about this, calling me names, all say it’s “an easy fix”, but refuse to tell me until I tell them I am a stupid idiot and apologise for criticizing Linux.

Someone literally told me to apologize for saying this, lmao. I’m called an idiot, moron, that I am the problem, all because Linux refuses to work, and the hardcore FOSS/Linux Lemmy community can’t handle it.

This place is so tiring. Reddit users were toxic, but Lemmy users are even more so. I guess that’s what happens when you get all the banned people, like you said, and a group of people who hate Reddit, in one place. Lemmy reminds me of VOAT. Instead of insane right-wing hate, it’s just insane hate to anyone who dares pay money for something, or says something negative about FOSS/Linux.

Didn’t realize only old people could have organ transplants, cancer, autoimmune disease, or just simply weaker immune systems.

Or Windows just works on so much different hardware. You can build a PC with the weirdest mix and match of hardware, and Windows will just… work. Also I bought a Microsoft sidewinder wheel from 1998 from a thrift store for $8, plugged it into my Windows 10 PC, and it just worked. Nothing special was needed. 1998 hardware literally plug and play on Windows 10 (and I’ve tested it on 11, and it works the same).

You can install MacOS on non-Apple hardware, but you need to buy very specific hardware, and download very specific hacks, to make it work.

Even Linux only works on specific hardware. This entire thread has people talking about how broken Linux is on their setups. The suggestions are to buy specific hardware and run very specific versions of Linux.

Can’t wait for Linux to be mainstream in 2085!

They also push their VPN a lot. Every week or two I open Firefox and they send me to their VPN page on their website telling me to try it.

That’s an extremely small minority, and you can turn it off if you want.

Ubuntu is the best bet for a distro to just work well out of the box.

Granted I have still had a fuck ton of issues, errors, etc, but Ubuntu is the only distro that has worked the best out of the box. Fedora was a broken mess, and Mint was in between.

So if you want anyone to not give up on Linux, direct them towards Ubuntu first. You can always switch distros later, but spending 3 days trying to fix issues on a different distro isn’t fun.

I didn’t know what to do. I was being threatened with a ban, even after explaining myself and my edits.

At the end of the day the Wikipedia page didn’t matter to me that much. Who cares if people get misinformation about an OS update. I quite literally didn’t get paid enough to deal with that.

It just really changed my perspective on Wikipedia. Unless you look at the history and check out profiles of people who get in edit battles, you really don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes.

At the end of the day the Wikipedia page I was trying to edit ended up being corrected by someone else (who completely disregarded all of my effort), but it took a month, and someone else to do it, before the page wasn’t full of misinformation anymore. RIP to anyone who visited that page within that month and never returned, because they were fed 80% misinformation.

Other than me, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a person, business, etc, in the wild running Linux.

Even business signs/billboard I’ve seen run Windows.

Their profile was banned last time I looked about a year ago. My profile I deleted because it was permanently tainted by that asshole spamming my talk page.

I remember posting about it on Reddit back when it happened a few years ago, and everyone in the comments told me how they’ve had similar experiences. Really just made me weary about trusting Wikipedia. I mean sure, if they get the date of a movie wrong that’s fine, but as for more serious topics, I just can’t really trust it.

Even sources can be garbage. I’ve seen plenty of blog spam cited as sources, which means nothing.

I edited a page for a new OS update that was coming out. The page was FULL of misinformation, and I cleaned it up, linked official documentation as sources, etc.

My edits were reverted by some butt hurt guy who originally wrote the page full of misinformation, 0 sources, and broken English.

I reverted back to mine.

He reverted back to his.

He spammed my profile page calling me names, and then reported me to Wiki admins. I was told not to revert changes or I would be perma-banned. I explained how the original page was broken English, misinformation, and 0 sources were cited. They straight up told me they did NOT care.

Stopped editing wiki pages, and stopped trusting them. They didn’t care about factual information. They just wanted to enforce their reverting rule.

Considering pretty much every sub went back public, and they have seen no drop in users, I’d say no.

I put EVERYTHING on credit card, and pay everything off on time. Never missed a payment. My credit score was the highest it can be by the time I turned 21. I’ve never paid a penny in fees or interest.
