Thanks for this. As part of onboarding I have been trying to update where I can. There are times I wonder if I am adding to docs what others may perceive as fluff as it may be something obvious to them. I like to work with a “If we’re all on a bus that goes over a cliff, does someone new have everything they need?” mentality.

At present the team is using GitHub Pages, which almost feels like a hurdle itself in updating the documentation quickly and keeping it organised and consistent. Being a junior I personally prefer a WYSIWYG. From your experience is there any pros/cons in using a WYSIWYG vs Markdown?

I hate when people ask me to pass them their glasses. They’re putting the responsibility of not smudging their glasses on me. Sure I can do it, but there is always that small possibility of failure.

If the glasses are folded up there is that moment of trying to decide how to grab the glasses. Do I grab them by the bridge bit that sits on their nose, or by the bits that hook over the ears? Surely it’s too risky to grab by the frame around the glasses… if they exist.

This weekend just gone I’ve been playing Sins of a Solar Empire II & Steam World Heist II. Both great games, the style and music in SWHII is really well done, and a worthy successor to the first game.

“It’s the anxiety associated with real-time conversations, potential awkwardness, not having the answers and the pressure to respond immediately” - this hits the nail on the head for me about not wanting to be on the phone/teams call in the work place. Being pulled into a call with no context is my biggest nightmare.

It looks like a VR tech demo that they decided to change into a non-vr game.

If it were me I would add a giant creature into it that has a personality depending on how I and the villagers treat it. Maybe change the name to something that rhymes with “Back and Kite” and slap a number on it, the number 3 feels right for some reason.

The key thing here is that they are tools.

I asked an artist friend who is staunchly against the use of AI for art to draw a spider wearing flip flops. I generated an image of it in what took probably 30 seconds, after 3 weeks he came back with a drawing that imo is better than what the AI produced. I wonder, had my friend made use of AI (meeting half-way) could he have reduced the time it had taken and on top of that produced a better image than what the AI did on its own?

I was absolutely excited for Black and White when I was younger. In school we had to write an article for English class and I chose to write about Black and White’s upcoming release. I got a good mark from it and my English teacher was equally intrigued.

The game came out and I sunk a good amount of hours into it. Was it the best game? No of course not, but it gave me great memories. I don’t think I’ll ever go back and play it again as it won’t live up to the nostalgia, but it would be interesting if someone attempted to tackle this kind of genre again.

It’s not the destination but the journey. In that 360 turn you may have looked inwards and at your past, identified failings of the past or remember things you forgot about that you loved. When you reach that 360 point you’re more aware of what has been and may have a different outlook on what could be. Or something like that…

I have no preference! It was to do with Spring/yaml config and some really strange conflict which required the use of single quotes. I’m still a total noob in the world of software dev, so I wouldn’t be able to explain why it worked 🤣

It sucks. A lot of businesses, not just in game development, are getting rid of contractors as they’re expensive. I hope those contractors successfully find work soon.

If anyone genuinely feels this way and wants to get started in coding, I highly recommend doing one of the mooc.fi courses. Codecademy is fine as a taster/refresh but don’t waste money on the premium when something like mooc is available for free.

I’m hoping something occurs to retcon the Discovery future, because it’s not a future of trek that I’m excited to see more of.

I’ve only recently joined the dev world and I saw this post in the morning. Late this afternoon I’m doing a deployment that fails, couldn’t determine the cause as I’m a noob, before bothering a more senior dev for help I run it again… It worked.

I have to disagree with the Windows key being useless. Win+Shift+S for selective screen grab to clipboard. Win+E to open a new Explorer window. Win+D to show the desktop. They were my go-tos. Now I’m forced to use Mac I use the Win key all the time too, Win+C, Win+V…
