I’m not saying I understand the magnitude, but ICYMI: the populist right is also winning left and right in Europe. In my country, it’s mostly just kind of funny since these blowhards are only now realising governing a country is kind of difficult and lots of government employees are just fighting against everything that’s idiotic or destructive.

Thing is, one man can only do so much. If there are still people on the inside who have a feel for wrong and right, democracy is pretty rigid. People are desperate, but nowhere near as desperate as Germans were in the 30s after the huge sanctions and fines after The Great War.

In any event: my take on it all is to see what happens. If you voted, you did all you can do other than organising and taking to the streets. That’s essentially what your second amendment is for. To put a positive spin on it: maybe he will actually improve your admittedly declining country. I just hope the means won’t be catastrophic for anyone.

I think it’s pretty much impossible to fully get out of filter bubbles, but the only way to really get every view on everything is to be part of everything mainstream AND everything more underground. Personally, I don’t feel the need to associate with any other social media. I think toxicity differs from being exposed to a different point of view.

Reddit has had the problem for years that if you tried to make a point that slightly differed from the hive mind’s opinion, however eloquently you would put it, everyone would just pile on with their ‘akshually’ mentality and not even be open to any other viewpoint than their own.

And that’s toxicity without even mentioning folks that would just say ‘no’ followed by hateful language.

I feel Lemmy is a far kinder, more balanced community where you can have a polite discussion about stuff. And OP is right, if a certain instance shows its users can’t behave or have such different views than your own, you can just make them go away and enjoy the rest of Lemmy.

I just hope those users don’t defederate from the rest of us so at some point they will have a more nuanced view of things.

The downside of that is the filter bubble or echo chamber effect. Question is whether Lemmy should be a fun experience for you or something to broaden your horizons a little

If you haven’t tried them, give Ori a go. I finished Ori and the Blind Forest, it was amazing. Then I went on to Ori and the Will of the Wisps which builds on the first one. So in the first one you’ll be unlocking stuff and in the second one you can still do all those things and some extra stuff you’ll have to select according to the situation.

First off: cables don’t have version numbers. The host and the client have ports that adhere to a certain spec and the HDMI foundation made that very unclear by incorporating 2.0b into 2.1 and now not every 2.1 port supports the same things. Cables are defined by their max bandwidth, i.e. high speed, ultra high speed or high speed with ethernet. You might see marketers saying something is a 2.1 cable, that just means it is capable of supporting some or all of the 2.1 spec.

Second: the only reason to get new HDMI cables, like you said, is if you currently have a very old one and have devices that actually make use of the bandwidth. And I’ll tell you right now, most of the high speed cables will do just fine. It’s when you start doing 8k120 with HDR and VRR with eARC you’ll need heftier cables. The only external devices to support that, though, are either supplied with cables because their makers don’t want you bottlenecking your device, or they are PCs.

Third: the only reason HDMI is even a thing is because this joint venture behind it successfully lobbied their inferior product to TV manufacturers. DisplayPort has always been and will always be the better interface for video.

I think I need to read up on the fediverse a bit more. Technically it looks like anything in the fediverse at the moment is ActivityPub, even though it supports 3 more protocols. At this point, only Hubzilla uses something other than ActivityPub, even though it also makes use of AP. I was confused because Matrix is also an open protocol and also federated. I had figured everything federated could talk to each other underneath… That’d be the dream, right?
