When single user interfaces start becoming problematic, they will be. Neither of these platforms have reached a large enough size to need it, but it will eventually be necessary for groups of servers to only federated with themselves to ensure compatibility and scalability. We already have issues with propagating content, systemic and programmaticly.
You fundamentally so not understand the problem with federation and the admins. Is not a good thing just because it is, it’s the same problem, in a different coat.

and then that instance get defederated by one of the big instances or has other performance issues because its not one of the big instances and now you’re stuck picking from the big instances if you want any kind of content and curation on a socialmedia platform built to centralize users into interest groups so they can curate and discuss content. but yeah, defederatino is good for that, lets you live in your completely unpopulated bubble.

you need an account to go to an instance that isn’t federated. this is the core flaw that makes this entire system unusable for normal people. you don’t want to have multiple accounts just so you can post the same memes in 12 different servers to get 1/40th the interaction you would get if everyone was centralized. this isn’t a discord server, its a link aggregator and decentralizing the aggregator is antithetical to making this service work.

its not a bug, its a feature! the faceless admins get to tell you watch content you can get now, not a faceless corporations! its so good that all the instances are starting a war with each other over the content they host because it means we have the choice of who gets to decide what content we like to see!.
Sharing torrents in a private group is a zero sum game. Ideally you have everyone with a 1:1 ratio but if some users go far above that they are taking ratio from other users who might be fully willing to provide upload, but simply didn’t get there in time. You can set torrents to close after they reach a specific ratio, but that also means bringing down the availability of that torrent.
Also, it’s much harder to get to a 1:1 ratio if you only download less popular content because no one will download it from you for a long while.
outside of the keyboard, you could defiantly make this into a viable terminal interface. just make sure all of the “widgets” are relevant information and its not a bad idea.

your whole example is centered around 2 groups inability to communicate with each other. its the worst possible example of people who are fully capable of communicating simply electing not to because it makes them feel better. witch isn’t what’s happening here.
a simple flaw in this design is that users on lemmy.world and users on beehaw.org are not federated, so how do we resolve that issue for a community that is on .ml, .world, beehaw, and nsfw, beehaw would have to support content from world, who they are currently defederated with, or their users would just not see content from world users. the whole premise of defederation is ironically antithetical to the premise of federation. by making a larger group of distributed users, the system could work great. but the admins are taking their personal issues to each other causing fractures that make adoption for newer users and more laymen basically impossible. that whole “it doesn’t matter what instance you use” is complete BS at this point since half of the top 5 instances are defederated frome at least 1 other.
The reality is that it’s probably much easier than you might think.
