This seems like a cool idea, but also somewhat questionable from a security standpoint? Isn’t distributing the encrypted content alongside the means to decrypt it (i.e. bundling this all in one file which is sent to the client) essentially equivalent to providing physical access to an encrypted drive? Like an attacker with enough time and effort could bypass the encryption.

Well if you want my opinion, I do it out of sheer laziness. Like I said above, I’m way more into tuning the stats in RPG builds than appearance. Sure, if I need to be a non-human to get a particular buff or ability I want, then I’ll do that. Otherwise, it’s human male, olive skin, short black hair, beard, done.

If the game wants me to create a character I’ll just make a dude like me and spec him out with the stats I want. If there’s preset characters to choose from, I couldn’t care less who they are. Take a look at fine grained personal access tokens on GitHub, and this SO thread that discusses using them over HTTPS. In theory this should allow you to make a token that can only access the one remote repository, for a temporary duration you define (you could set this to end shortly after your semester for instance). I’ve never personally set this up so YMMV, but this seems to be the right way to achieve what you want.
