  • If you live in a climate in which you need to winterize your outdoor faucets (e.g. by shutting a valve in your basement, crawlspace, or garage) a temperature sensor on the warm side of the valve can save you from a flood.

I had to replace the garage door opener one winter and failed to notice a new quarter inch gap at the bottom of the garage door. Combine that with a cold snap and the garage dropped below freezing for long enough to burst pipes.

Fortunately I had a Shelley flood sensor on the floor so I was alerted fairly early and was able to avoid serious damage, but had I been paying attention to the pipes themselves I could have avoided a plumber call-out on Christmas Eve!

  • I like the idea of packaging up a user liked that. Check out lasim for someone doing something similar.

But, you don’t really need to create an account on every instance you encounter.

One account is enough if you pick a reasonably sane instance that hasn’t gotten itself defederated.

From an account on one instance you can view All, subscribe to Communities on any instance, and generally just use that as your home base.

If you want a few accounts as insurance in case the instance you picked goes offline due to external factors or for whatever reason, you can use lasim to synchronize your subscriptions between instances.

  • The internal usb and SD card slot are just there in case you want to boot from usb or SD.

You can install your OS to them and then all of your HDDs can be used for storage instead of losing capacity to an OS partition.

Back in the day, we would look for the newest SmartStart CD to install from, but it’s no longer possible to get from official channels. Also they’re only useful for installing the supported operating systems.

The G7 knows the thermal profile of most HP hardware of it’s generation and runs the fans at the appropriate speed for proper cooling for known hardware, but sticking anything 3rd party (or just newer) in there will ramp it up to max cooling mode for thermal protection. It’s a pain.
