After more than 2 years since Apple booted Fortnite from the App Store for violating the stores terms of service Epic looks set to bring the game back to Apple devices.
A new EU law requiring Apple to allow apps to be installed from outside of the App Store comes into force on March 7th 2024 which will allow users in the 27 EU countries to install apps and third party app stores that haven’t been vetted by Apple.
The rule will also allow app developers to bypass Apple’s in-app purchase system and offer out-of-app payments however Apple will still require a 12% to 27% commission on out-of-app sales.
The new rules regarding out of app purchases will also apply to the United States following a Supreme Court ruling but the rest of the world be unaffected by the changes including the UK which formally left the European Union in 2020.
Epic is already challenging Apples decision to charge commissions on out-of-app purchases in the US and EU however experts say this is very likely to fail as it is common practice for such transactions.
It also opens the door for Microsoft to bring a GamePass streaming app to iOS devices in the EU after being blocked by Apple.
