Don’t just look at sdb hits in the log. Open up that entire session in journalctl kernel mode (journalctl -k -bN where N is the session number in session history) and find the context surrounding the drive dropping and reconnecting.

You’ll probably find that something caused a USB bus reset or a similar event before the drive dropped and reconnected. if you find nothing like that try switching power supplies for the HDD and/or switching USB ports until you can move the drive to a different USB root port. Use lsusb -t and swap ports until the drive is attached beneath a different root port. You might have a neighboring USB device attached to the bus that’s causing issues for other devices attached to the same root port (it happens, USB devices or drivers sometimes behave badly.)

Always look at the context of the event when you’re troubleshooting a failure like this, don’t just drill down on the device messages. Most of the time the real cause of the issue preceded the symptom by a bit of time.

Their focus on everything but the economy during the campaign killed them. If they’d announced a major economic stimulus campaign to get folks back to where they were before the pandemic they’d have won. That gaffe on The View pegged Kamala as completely out of touch with what’s going on for working class people (who are struggling, and have been struggling for quite some time.)

From what I could tell the campaign platform was “We’re not trump, and btw we support women and we ❤️ PoC/LGBTQ+” (which is essentially the same campaign Hillary ran and lost with.)

They didn’t brag about how many jobs they created with the infrastructure spending acts and didn’t announce any further plans to keep that going. If they did then they certainly failed to fill the air with it. There was no message of change and hope which, let’s be honest, after 35+y of leaving the bottom 80% out of the Wall St economy a huge number of people were waiting to hear.

They started using stabilizers in cheap ice cream a while back. That helps it have the fluffy texture you expect even though it doesn’t have nearly enough fat to churn up nicely by itself.

Buy expensive ice cream with a higher fat content (more cream content and or egg yolks,) it’s worth the extra money.

Also it helps to bring an insulated freezer bag when you go to the store, the melt and refreeze between the store freezer and home does unpleasant things to ice cream texture. If you’ve ever had icy or hard ice cream it has probably melted at some point during transit before refreezing.

I didn’t hear much of anything about social spending, creating a ton of jobs or any plan at all for the federal govt to help the bottom 80% outside of “we’ll help families buy their first house” from the Kamala campaign. When we rolled into the last month and I still hadn’t heard about the big economic plan I knew we were cooked.

First houses are great and all but what about people who can’t afford their own place to live, or healthcare, or enough food? Folks have been living with parents since the pandemic, food banks are seeing record use right now and they campaigned on neoliberal business as usual with more growth for Wall St? “We’re very proud of Bidenomics”? Bidenomics did great pulling us out of the pandemic slump but then inflation happened and we never pivoted to giving folks any help getting back to where they were before the pandemic happened. Nor did we make a show of going after corporate profiteering, we just let that happen without a peep. What about mass layoffs over the last couple of years followed by record setting stock buybacks, dividend payouts and corporate profits?!

Your usual base of well off educated voters who see the long term stability and overall growth benefit Dems bring showed up of course but everyone else stayed home because more neoliberalism after 30y of that plan leaving 80% of us behind simply doesn’t inspire hope or excitement. Meanwhile you had the other guy shouting “I’ll break laws to change things!” Guess which of those is more popular right now?

Basically Dems were just out of touch with the most important part of their base until it was too late.

Which is their consistent problem every election when the prior Republican admin hasn’t made a catastrophic fuck-up.

You can’t run on the “we’re pro labor” platform and expect the working class to show up for you when your pro labor stance hasn’t put money directly into working class pockets since the 1970s or 1980s.

Where are the big public works programs? Where’s the massive government spending that employed millions? That’s why labor showed up for Democrats in the 1900s, when there were huge govt contracts that employed organized labor, and it’s no surprise at all that when Democrats abandoned those policies labor stopped being reliable supporters.

You want to run a successful campaign? Talk about the massive public spending that employed hundreds of thousands during your prior admin. Talk jobs. Talk improved standard of living. Talk taxing corporations to pay for those things and voters will hand you a landslide. Democrats are so afraid of taxing corporations to pay for social spending that directly recruits voters to their cause that they’re seen as corporate stooges. And honestly, they kinda are at this point.

Write a couple of your own toy services as practice. Write a one-shot that fires at a particular time during boot, a normal service that would run a daemon and a mount service that fires after its dependencies are loaded (like, say, a bind mount that sets up a directory under /run/foo after the backing filesystem is mounted - I do this to make fast ext4 storage available in some parts of the VFS tree while using a btrfs filesystem for everything else.) You can also write file watcher services that fire after changes to a file or directory, I use one of those to mirror /boot/ to /.boot/ on another filesystem so it’s captured by my system snapshots.

I’d start by reading the docs so you have some ideas about what services can do, then you’ll find uses that you wouldn’t have thought of before.

Try searching for authors who describe their work as “Speculative fiction” - that’s the way most of them don’t admit to writing low-brow schlock like sci-fi.

Also near future sci-fi tends to be a bit lighter on the “magical machine” plot tropes. Climate fiction might be worth looking into too, most of the near future books exploring possible global warming consequences aren’t all hopped up on magical technological advances.

Edit: also check out various books described as literary speculative fiction. Authors who want the intellectual cred of being a literary writer tend to land in the speculative fiction genre more often than not.

I had to set one of these up for my SO a couple of years ago. I dropped EndeavourOS on it, installed btrbk and configured automatic snapshots on a schedule and before package installation/update in case she managed to bork things by pip installing things into system python.

Fedora would probably work well too if you want a lower maintenance burden. I hesitate to suggest Ubuntu or Debian or their derivatives since you’ll probably want to be somewhat current with your Nvidia drivers.

Honestly, unless the community can all get behind one set of recommendations it’s going to fall on whoever’s running the instance.

I’m really hoping we see some kind of server side community bundling sometime soon because that would make it possible for users to curate bundles of communities themselves and people could just subscribe to those if building a subscription list is too much effort. Present new users on an instance with the top 5 or 10 bundle feeds and let them explore those while they build their own subscription selection.

I just drop Lemmy post links the way I used to drop reddit links and answer questions if someone asks about Lemmy. That’s really all it takes to draw interested people in over time.

I drop links to interesting Lemmy posts into discord and my other communication channels in moderation and it’s hooked a couple of handfuls of my friends enough to make an account and join. Reddit spread because people linked to useful communities there often, we can do the same thing here with time and effort. We’re not going to see explosive growth the way a commercial enterprise would, we don’t have the marketing budget or the salaried people paid to grow the community, we have to do it ourselves slowly and consistently like we have been. Make useful posts, link people to the site, do what you can to reduce the barrier to entry for new folks, etc etc.
